What will I learn?
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is offered in all faculties of the University of New South Wales and encourages initiative and originality in research. Candidates should make a significant contribution to knowledge in their field.
As a general guide, the UNSW entry requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy are as follows:
A candidate for the degree shall have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor with Honours from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Research Committee of the appropriate Faculty.
Candidates may be admitted to the PhD program after one year's full-time enrolment in a Masters by Research program, with the approval of the Faculty Postgraduate Affairs Committee.
In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enroll for the degree.
On successful completion of the PhD program, students will have the ability to:
Design, plan and execute an original piece of research that makes a substantial contribution to disciplinary knowledge
Undertake self-directed research and produce high-quality outcomes in an acceptable time period
Critically evaluate relevant academic literature and perspectives in order to assess arguments and evidence in relation to their research program
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the diversity and applicability of different methods of problem solving and research inquiry
Determine and apply appropriate research methods for their research problem
Demonstrate and apply advanced knowledge and scholarship in a specialist field related to their research problem
Demonstrate high level and systematic knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods and applications of their discipline
Communicate complex issues and impart scholarly knowledge, both orally and in writing, to peers and the scholarly community
This program involves a minimum of three years full-time study. Students undertake supervised research leading to the production of the thesis. The length of a doctoral thesis normally should not exceed 100,000 words of text and should be submitted for examination within 4 years of full-time study.
Accounting is concerned with the provision of information for the management of economic resources and activities by means of measurement, communication and interpretation of financial data; with the development of information systems; and with the financial accountability and management of business and public enterprises. Accounting lies at the head of economic exchange, whether conducted in physical or electronic markets. It enables students to comprehend many of the fundamental principles, processes and outcomes of business, thereby equipping students for a wide range of careers in businesses (from chartered accounting, management consulting, and provision of financial services to general management). Graduates are employed not only as accountants, but also as entrepreneurs, entertainment promoters, treasurers, chief financial officers, etc.

Applicants with a completed Bachelor is degree or equivalent. English Language Requirements: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall (min. 6.0 in each subtest); TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT): 90 overall (min. 23 in writing, 22 in reading, listening and speaking); TOEFL - Paper-based Test (PBT) 577 overall (min. 5.0 in TWE); Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - 64 overall (min. 54 in each subtest); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - 180 overall (min.180 in each subtest; Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) - 176 overall (min.169 in each subtest).

Entry Requirement For International Student

Candidates with a Master is degree with a significant research component and thesis in a relevant discipline are in general considered eligible for admission to a PhD program.
English Language requirements: IELTS score 7.0 overall (min. 7.0 in writing, 6.5 in other subtests), 96 overall (min. 27 in writing, 23 in reading, listening and speaking), TOEFL (PBT): 589 overall (min. 5.5 in TWE); University English Entry Course (UEEC): successful completion of the UEEC with a grade of C plus and a minimum score of 20 in the writing component; PTE (Academic) - Pearson Test of English academic: 65 overall (min. 58 in each subtest); Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 185 overall (min.180 in each subtest); Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): 185 overall (min.176 in each subtest).
