Courses Overview

What will I learn?
Our Art Curating degree will provide you with a rich combination of core academic skills, historical knowledge, critical insight and community engaged experience, creating pathways to careers and professional development in art institutions of all types. You will explore and analyse traditional institutions such as museums and galleries, as well as the expanding field of contemporary curating and its wide range of non-traditional exhibition spaces, including artist-run and community art spaces, public art projects, festivals and commercial spaces.
The Master of Art Curating will provide you with a rich combination of core academic skills, historical knowledge, critical insight and community-engaged experience, creating pathways to careers and professional development in art institutions of all types.
You will explore and analyse traditional institutions such as museums and galleries, as well as the expanding field of contemporary curating and its wide range of non-traditional exhibition spaces, including artist-run and community art spaces, public art projects, festivals and commercial spaces.
Candidates for the Master of Art Curating are required to complete 72 credit points including:
a) a minimum of 18 credit points of core units of study; and
b) a minimum of 12 credit points of core elective units of study; and
c) a maximum of 36 credit points from elective units of study. With the permission of the Degree Coordinator a maximum of 12 credit points of elective units can be taken from units of study outside those listed in the Art Curating subject area of the Postgraduate Unit of Study Table, including a maximum of 6 credit points from units of study offered by other faculties.
d) at least 6 credit points of capstone units of study.
Graduate opportunities
Graduates will possess a strong foundation in the history of art museums and their cultural impact, and an awareness of the changing nature and role of curators in society and the current challenges they face. Our graduates will be well prepared for employment in a gallery or curatorial organisation.
Further study
Graduates who receive an average mark of 80% or above and who have completed a 12 credit point dissertation would be able to apply for a PhD in Art Curating.

Entry Requirement From Vietnam

Applicants must have completed a Australian bachelor's degree or higher with a credit average (65 percent) or equivalent qualification and fulfill the following three criteria: professional work experience in a relevant field (typically two years in a managerial role); complete a selection interview and provide a one-page statement of motivation (outlining what will be achieved professionally and personally by completing the course); or The University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Business Administration with a credit average (65 percent). Units completed in the graduate diploma can be credited to the master's degree. English Language Requirements: IELTS 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL Paper based score of 592 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing; TOEFL IBT: A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; PTE Academic score of 68; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): 67; Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE): 51; Cambridge English scale: CAE and CPE: 185.


Entry Requirement For International Student

Entry in the 1 year or 1.5 year degree program is determined by the criteria below:
Admission to candidature for the Master of Art Curating (1.5 year full-time) requires:
(a) a bachelor is degree with a major in Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Cultural Geography, Cultural Studies, Education, English, Gender Studies, History, Indigenous Studies or related field, and a minimum credit (65 percent) average calculated over the whole degree, from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification
Admission to candidature for the Master of Art Curating (1 year full-time) requires:
(a) completion of the embedded Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Art Curating with a minimum credit (65 percent) average, or an equivalent qualification or
(b) an Honours degree in a relevant discipline or
(c) relevant professional work experience and a bachelor is degree with a minimum credit (65 percent) average or an equivalent qualification
English language requirements: TOEFL paper-based: A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing TOEFL IBT: including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
