For those of you planning to study abroad, the IELTS test format is undergoing significant changes in 2026. These changes include a full transition to a computer-based system and the introduction of new hybrid options. Here are the important points you need to know:

Full Transition to Computer-Based Testing

The traditional paper-based IELTS test will officially be discontinued globally. In Indonesia, the British Council has mandated that all IELTS tests will fully transition to computer-based starting June 21, 2026. The benefits? Test results are released much faster (only 1-5 days) and test schedules become more flexible. You will complete Listening, Reading, and Writing on a computer, while Speaking will remain a face-to-face interview.

Hybrid "Writing on Paper" Option

If you feel more comfortable and faster writing by hand when composing essays, IELTS provides a Writing on Paper option. You will complete the Writing section on paper, while other sections remain computer-based.Important to note: Availability is limited, there is no automatic word count feature, scores depend on the clarity of your handwriting, and test results may be released slightly later. This option is not applicable for IELTS for UKVI.

"One Skill Retake" (OSR) Feature

Now you can retake just one test skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) without having to retake the full test! Requirements:

  • Your original test must be computer-based.

  • OSR must be taken a maximum of 60 days from the initial test date.

  • Only applicable once per full test.

  • Always ensure your target university or immigration institution accepts OSR results (e.g., IRCC Canada does not accept OSR).

What Remains the Same?

Don't worry, the test structure, time allocation, scoring system (0-9 scale), difficulty level, and global recognition of IELTS remain completely unchanged.

Estimated IELTS Test Fees in Indonesia (2026)

Based on British Council standards as of June 2026:

  • IELTS Academic / General: Rp 3,600,000

  • IELTS for UKVI: Rp 4,060,000 As of July 1, 2026, all test payments in Indonesia will only accept online methods.
