For Indonesian students dreaming of pursuing higher education in China, there's good news! The Chinese government continues to make studying there more accessible and appealing to international students. The latest policies for the 2026 academic year show improvements in visa processing, university application flexibility, and scholarship availability.

China Student Visa Policies (X1 & X2 Visas)

There are two main types of student visas for studying in China, distinguished by the duration of your study program:

  • X1 Visa: Designed for long-term study programs exceeding 180 days, such as Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degrees. X1 visa holders are required to apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days of their arrival in China.
  • X2 Visa: For short-term study programs lasting up to 180 days, such as short language courses or semester exchange programs. You do not need to apply for a Residence Permit if you hold an X2 visa.

The X visa application process has been streamlined for 2026, with a reduction in visa form items by up to 34 percent and the removal of pre-booked appointment requirements at embassies in some cases. Additionally, visa fees have been lowered by 25 percent as part of broader visa facilitation measures. However, it's important to note that the extended 30-day visa-free policy for some countries does not cover study purposes.

Key Documents for Visa Application (2026)

Generally, you will need the following documents for your X1 or X2 student visa application in 2026:

  • A valid original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and a minimum of two blank visa pages.
  • A completed visa application form and a recent color passport photo (48mm x 33mm) with a white background.
  • The original and a photocopy of your Admission Letter from a recognized Chinese university.
  • The original JW201 or JW202 form (or DQ form for short-term programs) issued by the university.
  • A completed Physical Examination Record from a licensed hospital or doctor.
  • Proof of financial means (e.g., bank statements) showing approximately 20,000 RMB (~3,000 USD) for living expenses for 2026.
  • A Non-Criminal Record Certificate might be required.

University Application Requirements (2026/2027 Intake)

Chinese universities have two main intake periods: the primary intake in September and a smaller secondary intake in February/March. Applications typically open 6-8 months prior to the start date.

General Application Documents

Document requirements can vary, but generally include:

  • Passport copy.
  • Academic transcripts and diploma/degree certificate (with certified English translation).
  • Language proficiency certificates:
    • For Chinese-taught programs: HSK level 4 (for Bachelor's) or HSK level 5 (for Master's/PhD).
    • For English-taught programs: TOEFL iBT score of 80+ or IELTS score of 6.0+.
  • Study plan or personal statement.
  • Two recommendation letters.
  • Physical examination form.

Some universities may also require the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) for undergraduate applicants in 2026.

Scholarship Opportunities (Academic Year 2026)

China offers a highly competitive scholarship system, primarily through the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC). CSC scholarships typically cover full tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance, and a monthly living stipend (ranging from 2,500 RMB for Bachelor's to 3,500 RMB for PhD students per month in 2026). Deadlines for CSC applications for the 2026 intake generally fall between January and April.

In addition to CSC, provincial government and university-specific scholarships are also available.

It is crucial to always verify the latest information on the official websites of the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia, the Chinese Visa Application Service Center, and your target universities, as policies are subject to change.
