For those of you planning to study abroad, the TOEFL iBT test is one of the important requirements. Starting January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT test will undergo significant changes in its format and scoring system. These changes aim to make the test more efficient, relevant, and aligned with international language proficiency standards, namely CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
TOEFL iBT 2026 Test Format Changes
The updates to the TOEFL iBT test format in 2026 bring several key modifications you need to know:
Shorter Test Duration
One of the most noticeable changes is the shorter test duration. If previously the test lasted about two hours or more, now the total test completion time is approximately 90 minutes, not including the check-in process. There are no planned breaks between each test section, making the test experience more efficient.
Adaptive System in Reading and Listening Sections
The Reading and Listening sections now use a multistage adaptive format. This means that the difficulty level of questions in subsequent modules will adjust to your performance in previous stages. This adaptive design helps the test measure your English language ability more quickly and accurately.
New Question Order and Types
The order of test sections is now Reading, Listening, Writing, then Speaking. In addition, several new question types have been introduced in each section:
Reading: There will be new task types such as “Complete the Words”, “Read in Daily Life” (reading practical texts like emails or announcements), and “Read an Academic Passage”.
Listening: Questions include “Listen and Choose a Response”, conversations, announcements, and academic lectures.
Writing: This section now features three shorter functional writing task types, including “Build a Sentence”, “Write an Email”, and “Write for an Academic Discussion”. The old integrated essay task has been removed. The duration of the Writing section has also been shortened to approximately 23 minutes.
Speaking: The Speaking section has been revamped into two new, shorter task types: “Listen and Repeat” and “Take an Interview” or simulated interview questions. The duration of the Speaking section has also been shortened to approximately 8 minutes.
TOEFL iBT 2026 Scoring System Changes
The TOEFL iBT scoring system has also undergone a major overhaul to improve clarity and international alignment:
New 1-6 Scoring Scale
Starting January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT scores will be reported on a 1-6 band scale, with 0.5 point increments for each section (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) as well as the overall score. This new system is more intuitive and aligned with the CEFR framework.
Overall Score Calculation
The overall score is now calculated as the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band, no longer a total sum.
Transition Period and Score Reports
During the two-year transition period (January 2026 to January 2028), your score report will display both formats: the new 1-6 band score and a comparable estimated overall score of 0-120, as well as your CEFR proficiency level. After January 2028, only the 1-6 scale will be used.
Important for You to Know
Score results can now be accessed faster, approximately 72 hours after the test. It is important to always check the official website of your target university or institution to confirm the latest score requirements they accept, as some may still list them in the 0-120 format during this transition period.
